IPL 2025 mega auction will change the entire landscape of the league. According to a report by Cricbuzz, BCCI officials will meet with the team owners later this month to discuss the number of retentions and other rules for the mega auction.
Some teams want the number of retentions to be as high as eight, while others want the number of retentions to be as zero also. Assuming BCCI allows only one retention before the mega auction, here are our predictions for the possible names each team may retain.
1. Gujarat Titans may retain Shubman Gill before IPL 2025 mega auction
Shubman Gill’s career has skyrocketed ever since he joined Gujarat Titans. The right-handed batter also became the team’s captain last season, which is why he will be the team’s priority pick.
2. RCB will retain Virat Kohli before IPL 2025 mega auction
This is a done deal even before the official announcement. Virat Kohli has made it clear that he will not play for another IPL team apart from RCB. Hence, this decision will be quite easy.
3. CSK will retain MS Dhoni before IPL 2025 mega auction
Like RCB and Virat Kohli, CSK and MS Dhoni are inseparable. If Dhoni decides to play another IPL, CSK will retain him at any cost before the mega auction.
4. MI may retain Jasprit Bumrah before IPL 2025 mega auction
Jasprit Bumrah has proven himself as the best bowler of this generation. It will be a massive mistake from Mumbai Indians if they release him before the mega auction.
5. KKR – Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer has been the best number four batter for India in white-ball cricket over the last few years. Iyer also led KKR to the trophy last season, and the team may not like to release him now.
6. SRH – Pat Cummins
It will be quite difficult for Sunrisers Hyderabad if only one retention is allowed before the mega auction. However, if that rule comes, they should stick with captain Pat Cummins.
7. LSG – Nicholas Pooran
KL Rahul is likely to part ways with Lucknow Super Giants soon. The team already assigned the reins to Nicholas Pooran in a few league games last season, and he can be the next face of the franchise.
8. Punjab Kings – Sam Curran
Punjab Kings have a stacked lineup of star players. All-rounders like Sam Curran, who can bowl left-arm pace and contribute well with the bat are rare. Thus, Punjab should think about retaining him.
9. Rajasthan Royals – Sanju Samson
Rajasthan Royals have built their brand around Sanju Samson ever since they returned in the IPL. They retained him before 2022 mega auction and should do the same in 2025 again.
10. DC – Axar Patel
Axar Patel is the number one all-rounder in India right now. He can bat well, bowl economically and field brilliantly. Plus, he is a captaincy option as well. Hence, DC should think about retaining him.
