BCCI took the Indian cricket team fans by surprise earlier today as the All India Selection Committee named Shikhar Dhawan as the captain for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies cricket team. Dhawan, who captained the team on the Sri Lanka tour last year, will lead the Men in Blue in the three ODIs against the West Indies cricket team later this month.

Fans should note that Shikhar Dhawan has not played international cricket since the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League series against the West Indies cricket team at home earlier this year. He played for the Punjab Kings under Mayank Agarwal’s leadership. Despite his great form with the bat, Dhawan was ignored for the series against South Africa and Ireland.

Former Indian cricket team captain Aakash Chopra has recently commented on the inconsistency with Shikhar Dhawan’s selection in his YouTube video and said:

“His selection is not based on performances. He has been scoring runs in the IPL for the past three years. I am surprised that he was captain in Sri Lanka a year back and is now not even in the team. There should be better continuity in thinking.”

Another interesting decision made by the selectors is that they have named Ravindra Jadeja as the vice-captain. While Jadeja is the best all-rounder in India right now, he had a forgettable tenure as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings team in IPL 2022. Here is the full Indian squad for West Indies ODI series:

Shikhar Dhawan (C), Ravindra Jadeja (VC), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohd Siraj, Arshdeep Singh.
