Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in the Indian Premier League history with five IPL trophies and two CLT20 triumphs to their name. One of the main reasons behind MI’s success has been their auction strategy. They target some exceptionally talented players and form a champion squad.

However, it looks like the Mumbai-based franchise had their worst auction in IPL 2022. They are struggling in the new season with the bowling department looking weak. Former Australia captain Shane Watson recently opined that they probably overspent by signing Ishan Kishan for 15.25 crore.

In this listicle now, we will look at the five players MI tried to buy and bid for them at the mega auction but failed to execute the winning bid.

1. Mumbai Indians tried to buy Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuvzvendra Chahal is the owner of the IPL 2022 Purple Cap right now. Yesterday, he took a hat-trick against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Rajasthan Royals signed him for just INR 6.5 crore at the mega auction. The last team to bid before RR was MI who bid 6.25 crore.

2. Khaleel Ahmed

Mumbai have three capped left-arm pacers – Jaydev Unadkat, Daniel Sams and Tymal Mills in their squad. They could have added one more because they went till 5 crore for Khaleel Ahmed, who was eventually bought by Delhi Capitals for 5.25 crore.

3. Mumbai Indians tried to buy Trent Boult

Another left-arm fast bowler whom MI tried to sign was Trent Boult. They bid 7.75 crore for him, but Rajasthan Royals signed him with a bid of 8 crore.

4. Rahul Chahar

MI’s spin department looks pretty thin this year. The absence of Rahul Chahar has hurt the team. It is not that MI let him go without trying to buy him at the auction. They went till 4.6 crore for him, but eventually, Punjab Kings got his services for 5.25 crore.

5. Devdutt Padikkal

Mumbai Indians showed a lot of interest in Devdutt Padikkal’s services. They bid 7.5 crore for him, but again RR beat them with a bid of 7.75 crore. RR’s auction strategy hurt MI a lot in IPL 2022.
