Sharma departed to the dressing room after scoring 83 runs, while KL Rahul went on to complete his first Test hundred at Lord’s and scored 129 runs. None of the other Indian batsmen could touch the 50-run mark. Skipper Virat Kohli aggregated 42 runs, while the duo of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja scored total 77 runs. The Indian bowlers could not contribute with the bat like they had done in the Nottingham Test.

The Indian bowlers, though, made a fantastic start with the ball. Mohammed Siraj gave India the momentum by dismissing Dom Sibley and Haseeb Hameed off consecutive deliveries. At 14.3 overs, England were down to 23/2. However, Joe Root then played a captain’s knock and ensured that England took the vital first-innings lead.
