The 51st match of IPL 2022 saw the Mumbai Indians beat the Gujarat Titans in a last-ball thriller at the Brabourne Stadium. Daniel Sams was the hero for MI.

GT captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to field first. MI got off to a great start thanks to forties from Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma. However, once the opening pair was back in the hut, MI’s innings slowed down a bit.

The likes of Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav could not make much of an impact. It looked like Gujarat Titans would restrict the Mumbai Indians under 175. However, a fantastic cameo from Tim David helped MI finish with 177/6 in their 20 overs. Tim scored 44 runs off 21 balls, whacking two fours and four sixes.

Chasing 178 to register their ninth win of IPL 2022, the Gujarat Titans got off to a blazing start. For the first time in IPL 2022, both GT openers scored a fifty each. Shubman Gill aggregated 52 runs off 36 balls, while Wriddhiman Saha scored a 40-ball 55. Like the first innings, GT slowed down after their openers departed. Murugan Ashwin changed the game by dismissing both batters in the same over.

Hardik Pandya played a decent knock of 24 runs before getting run out, whereas Sai Sudharsan was hit wicket after scoring 14 runs. The likes of Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan and David Miller could not finish off the match this time as Daniel Sams kept his nerves and defended nine runs off the last over.

Speaking with the host broadcasters after the match, Sams said:

“What a crazy game! Obviously great to get over the line but it was one of those games that kept going backwards and forwards. It was exciting on the field. I just wanted to stick to my best ball.”
