The Chennai Super Kings have been one of the most decorated teams in IPL history. The Chennai-based franchise have participated in 11 seasons and qualified for the second round in ten seasons. Also, they have three IPL championships to their name. One of the key reasons behind CSK’s success has been MS Dhoni.

The Chennai Super Kings captain has always made the best use of the players available with him. Quite a few times it has happened in IPL that a player has picked up an injury and another player comes in his place. This thing has happened six times in the IPL history of the Chennai Super Kings.

Here’s a look at those eight instances.

1. The latest replacement signing by Chennai Super Kings in IPL History – Jason Behrendorff

Starting the list with the most recent replacement signing, Jason Behrendorff has joined the Chennai Super Kings franchise for IPL 2021. Behrendorff has played for the Mumbai Indians in the past.

The left-arm fast bowler from Australia has taken the place of his compatriot Josh Hazlewood in the CSK squad. Unfortunately, Hazlewood decided against playing IPL 2021 because of personal reasons.

2. One of the top replacement signings by Chennai Super Kings in IPL History – David Hussey

Another Australian player to be present on this list is the former Aussie all-rounder David Hussey. David’s brother Michael Hussey had already played for the CSK team in the IPL.

DJ Bravo suffered an injury during the 2014 edition of the Indian Premier League. As a result, the Chennai Super Kings roped in David Hussey and it proved to be a good choice because Hussey scored 116 runs and picked up two wickets in five matches.

3. Chamara Kapugedara

Not many fans might remember this replacement signing. In 2008, IPL was not so popular and so, a few international stars preferred playing only a few matches.

CSK also lost some big names due to international cricket. Hence, they signed Chamara Kapugedara as a replacement. Chamara played five IPL matches and scored 16 runs. Also, he gave away runs at an economy rate of 17.29.

4. Tim Southee

Current New Zealand vice-captain Tim Southee had played his first IPL season for CSK in 2011. Chennai had grabbed the services of Ben Hilfenhaus in the auction.

Unfortunately, Hilfenhaus was not available because of his injury issues. Due to this reason, CSK signed New Zealand’s Tim Southee as an injury replacement.

5. David Willey

Kedar Jadhav got injured in the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League during the game against the Mumbai Indians. He still came back and helped the team win. However, he could play further in the competition.

CSK had signed Jadhav in 2018. Unfortunately, he had to go for treatment after getting injured, prompting CSK to sign English all-rounder David Willey as the replacement player.

6. Scott Kuggeleijn

Unfortunately, the Chennai Super Kings lost Lungi Ngidi because of a side-strain injury in IPL 2019. Because of that reason, they hunted for a replacement and signed New Zealand’s Scott Kuggeleijn.

Kuggeleijn played two matches for the Super Kings and scalped two wickets. However, CSK did not retain him for the subsequent seasons.
