The Mumbai-based franchise has always had legendary players in its squad and here’s a look at the first ever playing XI of Mumbai Indians from the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2008.

Luke Ronchi and Sanath Jayasuriya

Very few fans might know that former New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman Luke Ronchi kept the wickets for Mumbai Indians in the first match. He was a part of the Australian domestic circuit then. Ronchi also opened the innings and scored 8 runs off 10 balls. Zaheer Khan dismissed him in the second over and he was caught by Virat Kohli. Ronchi has retired from all forms of cricket and he served as the fielding and wicket-keeping coach of the New Zealand team.

Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya opened the innings for Mumbai Indians along with Luke Ronchi. The left-handed batsman played a quickfire knock of 29 runs from 16 deliveries. The left-arm spin bowler also bowled four overs in the match, conceding 39 runs and dismissed Ross Taylor in the second innings. After retirement, Jayasuriya tried his luck in politics.
