The 56th match of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League is currently underway at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, where five-time champions Mumbai Indians are locking horns with two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders. Venkatesh Iyer was one of the five players who returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders’ playing XI for this match. The left-handed batter opened the batting for KKR along with veteran Indian opener Ajinkya Rahane.
Iyer showed no mercy to the Mumbai Indians bowlers as he smashed three fours and four sixes off their bowling. He had a quickfire partnership of 60 runs off just 5.4 overs. Venkatesh scored 43 runs off just 24 balls in that partnership. Mumbai Indians’ new bowler Kumar Kartikeya dismissed him seven runs short of his second consecutive half-century in IPL 2022 against the Mumbai-based franchise.
Speaking with the commentators during the innings, Kolkata Knight Riders coach Brendon McCullum gave his views on Venkatesh Iyer’s performance and said:
“It’s been a great start. Venkatesh Iyer came back in and showed what we were missing. Lovely to see him back. Looks like a pretty good wicket. Both are very experienced players and know their game very well. They are going to play different roles against spin and pace and you will them play aggressive cricket when the match-up comes.”
