The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League is in the history books. Like every season, the IPL organizers organized a grand presentation ceremony at the end of the final. The best performer among the emerging players received a trophy and a cheque at the presentation, and this year, Umran Malik won the prize.
Malik made his debut for the SunRisers Hyderabad in IPL 2021. He was a net bowler for the franchise but was promoted to the main squad as a replacement for T Natarajan. The Jammu and Kashmir bowler played only three matches in IPL 2021, but he impressed the SRH team management with his express pace, leading to SRH retaining him ahead of the mega auction.
The right-arm express pacer then set a record for winning 14 consecutive Swiggy Fastest Delivery of the Match awards. His pace seemed unmatchable as he even clocked 157 kmph on the speedometer. However, Malik missed out on the Fastest Delivery of the Season award. Lockie Ferguson edged him by bowling at 157.3 kmph in the IPL 2022 Final between the Gujarat Titans and the Rajasthan Royals.
Nevertheless, Umran won the award for the Emerging Player of the Season. He received 22% votes on the IPLT20.com platform. Incidentally, he took 22 wickets for the SunRisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022. The highlight of his campaign was his five-wicket haul in the match against the Gujarat Titans.
“I’m very happy for having won the Emerging Player Award. Thank you for your support and please keep supporting me in the same manner. I will look to keep doing well,” said Malik after winning the prize.
